KUDSI ERGUNER

BIOGRAPHY

Grown up through his father’s teachings, Kudsi Erguner is the best-known player and one of the last masters of the Turkish ney flute, the traditional oriental instrument.

His aristic and professional development was influenced by the contacts he had with many famous musicians from the old generation who were often coming to his parents’ house in Istanbul, and more than that by the musical and spiritual teachings coming from his direct participation to the Sufi brotherhoods, like the Mevlevi Dervish, better known as ‘whirling dervishes’.

After moving to Paris for his studies in architecture, Kudsi has also recorded several albums, he has collaborated with Peter Gabriel and has given a decisive contribution to the diffusion of Ottoman music.

Kudsi Erguner has also collaboratied with masters in the fields of cinema (Martin Scorsese and  Marco Ferreri) and dance (Carolyn Carlson and Maurice Bejart), and he has worked with Peter Brook on his masterpiece, the Mahabharata.
