When it was first seen in its human form at La Scala in 1842, Nabucco, an opera with music by Giuseppe Verdi and libretto by Temistocle Solera was an immediate success, having its first repeat that same year.
This adaptation for marionettes is a faithful recreation of that original staging, in a slightly smaller, if no less opulent, form. The beautiful music of Verdi complements perfectly the epic tale of political conflict and patriotism in Biblical times. During the show, the audience sees the invasion of the temple of Jerusalem, with the King of Babylon on horseback poised on the summit of the holy site, the burning of the city, the flight of the populace, secret passages that open to reveal disguised enemies, thunderbolts that strike down sacrilegious rulers and incinerate pagan idols. |
In the midst of all these fantastic events, the marionettes portray slaves believed to be the daughters of kings, lovesick princesses, brave knights, wandering prophets and cruel kings. |
