More than 150 marionettes take part in this retelling of the classic fairy tale, for so long considered something meant only for children. In choosing the text for this version, Eugenio Monti Colla has instead found that at base it is an admirable synthesis of allegory, symbolism and metaphor, and has chosen all the elements to underline and make clear the themes while retaining the sense of wonder provoked by the fable.
The music was written by Tchaikovsky for the ballet of the same name and underscores the dramatic moments and enhances the joyous ones. The marionettes portray the king and queen and court of the stricken princess, the good fairies Beauty, Modesty, Grace, Happiness, Melody, Fantasy and Harmony, and the evil fairy Desolation who curses the princess with her hundred-year sleep. In addition the piece contains fantastic imaginary creatures, terrifying monsters, and an enchanted forest where the trees move by themselves. |
